Backing up your data
Data backup is an essential skill if you're doing anything on a computer from saving
family photos to running a business. Data loss can destroy priceless family memories
and cripple businesses. The best way to prevent loss of data is to keep at least
two copies of the files at all times, using an external storage device.
There are many different options for backup devices, such as burning files to CD/DVD,
using a USB flash drive to save your data, or even using an external hard drive
to keep a complete backup of your computer. If you'd like more information about
any of these methods, feel free to come visit us instore and discuss your backup
needs.
Virus Alert!
Lately there has been a large number of computers coming in with fake antivirus
programs. Whenever you see a window open that appears to be a warning, pause for
a moment and think:
- Is this message from a program other than your current antivirus?
- Are there a lot of pop-up windows telling you to "Buy Now"?
- Is there a progress bar showing a scan in progress that you didn't start?
Any of these can be signs that you have a fake antivirus. We highly recommend that
you bring your computer in to us, or another professional of your choice, to prevent
further infection. When caught quickly there is a much higher chance of recovery
and removal.
Another important point to keep in mind is to watch what you install, and during
the installation of any software keep an eye out for "piggy-backers" - programs
and toolbars that try to come in bundled with other software. An example of this
is the Yahoo toolbar that comes with AVG Free Edition. Viruses and fake antivirus
programs can sometimes gain access to your computer in the same way.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that if your computer begins doing anything
that you don't think it should, or if a popup opens that's offering antivirus or
protection other than what you already have, the best course is to close the window.
Don't click "No" or "Cancel", simply click the red X.
